Organizers say a record 8,400 kilograms of documents were shredded during the June 11 event, held in Ocean Park.

“By 9:15 a.m. – well before (the shredathon) started at 10 a.m. – there were about 10 cars lined up at Ocean Park Safeway with their boxes ready for shredding,” Urban Impact founder Nicole Stefenelli said in a news release. “It was so busy that after only two hours, the shredding truck was filled to capacity, which has never happened before. This is the most amount shredded, ever, for a four-hour event.”

One person who attended donated $700.

shreditevent20160611_02copyLast Wednesday (June 15), the Rotary club presented Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) officials with a cheque for $5,000 – one-third of the club’s $15,000 sponsorship goal.

PADS breeds, raises and trains certified assistance dogs, which provide life-changing independence to people with physical disabilities other than blindness.

PADS Dogs visit Urban Impact June 6, 2016

On Monday, June 6, we had not one, but two puppies from the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) visit our office! Woof!

Renee Nicolson, the President of the South Surrey Rotary Club arranged for the two puppies to visit:

River- a more advanced puppy with seven months of training. She was an incredible example of how much a puppy can learn in a very short time! She could open and shut doors, site, lie and roll over on command and heel all from hearing the right clicking sound.

Archer- this male pup had just 6 weeks of training and was a ROCKSTAR!

We were treated to a real time display of the really cool things that the puppies could do, depending on their level of training. For example, River could take a rope in her mouth and pull. By pulling on a rope, River could open a fridge for a person that needs assistance. The puppies are trained using a clicker, followed up by a verbal command and then a special treat to reward their good behaviour. What truly amazed us was how calm, focused and well behaved the puppies were in an unknown situation. Even at a very young age, they were obedient on first command! Our staff really enjoyed having dog bone shaped cookies from Moores! Woof!z

PADS Shred Day shreds 8,400 kgs and raises $4,600

On Saturday, June 11 South Surrey Rotary Club’s Shred Day for PADS (Pacific Assistance Dogs Society) raised $4,600!  This is the biggest ever raised!

Total amount shredded was a record for Urban Impact:  8,400kgs!

By 9:15am, well before Shred Day started at 10 am, there were about ten cars lined up at Ocean Park Safeway with their boxes ready for shredding!

The PADS Shred Day was so busy that after two hours, our Shred Truck was packed to capacity.  Now this was a first!

There were 3 PADS puppies at the Shred Day until noon, then a changing of the guard, and 4 new pups arrived!

Also in attendance, MLA Gordon Hogg who came by to show his support of the South Surrey Rotary Club, PADS and the community.  Gordon is a BC Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly and has represented the riding of Surrey-White Rock since 1997.

Nicole will be attending South Surrey Rotary Club’s breakfast on June 15 where the Club will be presenting a big cheque to PADS.  The funds raised on Saturday’s Shred Day go towards the purchase of a PADS puppy- one puppy costs $15,000.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this PADS Day such a success! It’s very rewarding to hear such great results!
