Southlands Riding Club Joins Project Re‑Bounce

Southlands Riding Club has long been a unique and vibrant home for equestrian sport and recreation in Vancouver. Now, the Club is taking its commitment to environmental stewardship even further by joining Project Re‑Bounce, a province‑wide initiative dedicated to diverting end‑of‑life sports equipment away from landfills.

Tackling a Long‑Standing Waste Problem

In the waste hierarchy—rethink, reuse, repurpose, recycle—mixed‑material sports equipment has historically posed a challenge. Once items like helmets, pads, boots, and balls reached the end of their usable life, they had only one destination: the landfill.

Project Re‑Bounce was born from a startling fact: A single tennis ball takes more than 400 years to decompose naturally.  Multiply that by the thousands discarded every year, and the environmental impact becomes impossible to ignore.

A Province‑Wide Solution Powered by Partnership

Through a partnership with Urban Impact, Project Re‑Bounce has expanded across British Columbia. The program collects a wide range of sports equipment and transports it to Metro Vancouver’s Waste‑to‑Energy facility in Burnaby, where it becomes a renewable fuel source used to generate electricity purchased by BC Hydro.

This innovative approach gives worn‑out gear a meaningful second life—one that supports clean energy rather than contributing to landfill waste.

Collection Now Available at Southlands Riding Club

Starting April 21, riders and community members at Southlands Riding Club will notice a clearly labeled Project Re‑Bounce collection tote onsite. The tote lists all accepted items, making it easy for members to participate.

This is an electrifying opportunity for riders to finally clear out garages, tack rooms, closets, and mud rooms of items that are beyond donation quality—including old tack, apparel, protective gear, and more.

The collection tote is conveniently located in the Southlands Riding Club clubhouse. Once full, the Club simply contacts Urban Impact for pickup, ensuring the materials are responsibly managed and put to productive use.
