Cars In Rainy Traffic

Just like that, the clocks changed back an hour, and the weather changed to rain and wind.  With the arrival of fall, and darker days, Urban Impact would like to remind ourselves and our customers on some precautions we need to take ensure our drivers, trucks and communities stay safe.

Part 2 of our Fall Safety Guide focuses on weather, darkness & road conditions.  Safety is an ongoing focus, and our drivers receive comprehensive training to handle seasonal hazards.

Changing Road Conditions

Early fall rains lift oil and debris, creating slick surfaces, while fallen leaves can be slippery. Fog further reduces visibility during peak traffic times. Our trucks face added challenges with heavy loads and longer stopping distances. Drivers are trained to adjust speed, increase following distance, and approach turns and stops cautiously.

Reduced Daylight & Visibility

Shorter days mean less daylight during commutes, and dim light makes it harder to spot pedestrians, cyclists, and smaller vehicles. Wet roads can reflect glare, and trucks’ blind spots require extra vigilance. Our drivers use headlights early, stay alert for movement around their truck, and adjust speed to safely respond to hazards.

Driver Fatigue

Cooler mornings and early shifts can increase fatigue, reducing reaction times and attention. Drivers of large trucks need to stay focused due to their vehicle’s size and weight. Urban Impact trains drivers to recognize fatigue, take scheduled breaks, rotate shifts when possible, and maintain proper rest and hydration to remain alert throughout their routes.

Other Hazards

Fall also brings increased wildlife activity, hidden potholes under wet leaves, and cooler temperatures affecting traction. Waste truck drivers must stay aware, manage speed, and scan constantly to navigate these unpredictable conditions safely.

Driver Training Practices at Urban Impact

Urban Impact conducts regular reviews of high-risk intersections to ensure our drivers know where extra caution is needed. Defensive driving techniques are emphasized in every training session, while in-cab coaching and refresher courses help reinforce safe habits on the road. Key safety messaging is revisited at the end of summer to prepare drivers for fall conditions, busy school zones and increased traffic on slippery roads in reduced daylight.

Vehicle Reliability and Maintenance

Ensuring vehicles are in top condition is a critical part of keeping drivers and the public safe. Fall weather can put extra strain on trucks, from slick roads to cooler temperatures affecting tire traction and braking. At Urban Impact, all our vehicles undergo regular inspections and preventive maintenance, including brakes, tires, lights, and fluid levels. Drivers are trained to perform daily pre-trip checks and report any issues immediately. By maintaining reliable equipment, we reduce the risk of breakdowns or accidents, helping drivers navigate seasonal hazards with confidence.

Safety is our number one priority.  Our drivers have completed our Fall Safety driving refresher course. We hope these key takeaways provide confidence in our driving team and help you learn about their unique challenges. Please stay safe by keeping plenty of distance between you and the next vehicle.
