In the 1990’s, recycling began to take shape and become a household practice with the advent of the blue box and many urban centres across Canada added recycling routes for single family homes. In Vancouver’s Lower Mainland the regional district also supported waste diversion with new regulations banning materials from landfill. In the early stages it included a ban on cardboard and paper products and has continued evolving to include mixed rigid containers and materials including polystyrene, glass, wood, construction debris and organics.
With the changing public sentiment and acceptance of recycling supported by bans at the landfill, waste diversion began to take shape and thoughtful use of resources have become a business norm. The idea of Zero Waste is now a more accepted business practice.
