Man covering his ears

If you’ve ever heard a recycling truck reversing, you know the unmistakable beep‑beep‑beep. While the sound can be disruptive, especially in residential neighborhoods, it plays a critical role in keeping people safe. In British Columbia, backup alarms aren’t just recommended—they’re required by law.

The Legal Requirement Behind Backup Alarms

WorkSafeBC Regulation 16.8 outlines when mobile equipment must have an audio warning device:

“If an operator of mobile equipment cannot directly or by a mirror or other effective device see immediately behind the mobile equipment, the mobile equipment must not be used unless the mobile equipment has an audio warning device that (a) provides a signal to people in the vicinity that, if practicable, is audible above the ambient noise level in the workplace where the equipment is being used, and (b) is activated automatically when the equipment controls are positioned to move the equipment in reverse.”[en. B.C. Reg. 312/2010, App. L, s. 1.]

In other words: if visibility behind the vehicle is limited, a backup alarm is mandatory. This protects workers, pedestrians, and anyone near the equipment.

Safety First with Less Noise

Because of this regulation, Urban Impact must install and use backup alarms on all our trucks. We recognize the impact traditional tonal alarms can have on neighborhoods, especially during morning collection routes.

To balance safety with community comfort, our trucking team is actively testing and retrofitting our fleet with White Noise and Multi‑Frequency Backup Alarms.

White Noise and Multi‑Frequency Alarms are a Better Choice

These modern alarms offer a smarter, more community‑friendly approach to safety. Here’s how:

Reduced Noise Pollution

White noise alarms significantly reduce overall noise levels. Their “whooshing” sound blends into the environment and dissipates quickly, making them ideal for residential areas.

Highly Locatable Sound

The sound is directional and easier for pedestrians and workers to pinpoint. This improves safety by helping people immediately identify where the vehicle is and where it’s moving.

Fewer Noise Complaints

Because the sound doesn’t travel far beyond the danger zone, these alarms help reduce noise complaints and support compliance with municipal and regional noise regulations.

Built for Tough Work Environments

The alarms feature rugged blue housings made from glass‑filled nylon and durable urethane potting material. They’re designed to withstand the demanding conditions of commercial recycling operations.

A Better Experience for Everyone

By transitioning to white noise and multi‑frequency backup alarms, we’re taking meaningful steps to:

  • Maintain full compliance with WorkSafeBC safety regulations
  • Protect workers and pedestrians
  • Reduce noise pollution in the communities we serve
  • Improve the overall experience for residents living near our routes

At Urban Impact we are working to ensure safety and community well‑being don’t have to be at odds. With modern technology, we can deliver both.
