The weather perfectly timed with the changing of the clocks and fall has arrived. Time again for our fall reminder. To help keep us in motion and servicing all our customers, here are a few tips on keeping roadways clear and waste bins accessible.
Keep road and driveway surfaces clear
Fallen leaves quickly pile up on the edges of our local roads, clogging storm drains. Clogged drains lead to pools of water, which are dangerous and slippery. Please rake and pick up leaves and debris off road drains.
Help Each Other to Keep Bins Accessible
If your containers are in a communal alleyway, please work with your neighbors to keep the area free and clear. Clear access points make it safer and easier for our commercial vehicles to service your collection containers.
Temporarily Move Your Bins
If there’s a safer place for your collection bins to be serviced during winter conditions, please contact us. We can temporarily relocate your bin to a new location. If you’d like assistance with bin placement, we are available to help find the ideal location for your bins.
Dangers of Driving in Stormy Conditions
Hazardous road conditions can result in delayed service. Like many transportation companies, Urban Impact will face the challenges of dangerous roadways due to powerful winter storms.
Commercial truck tires are made of harder compound than residential vehicles, making operating these trucks in wet and slippery conditions a challenge. Our drivers are trained to handle these types of weather-related conditions, but there are limitations for our drivers and their trucks.
Slippery Slopes and Crowning Roads
Any crown or incline or incline on a roadway can be extremely dangerous for commercial vehicles. In the rain, snow, and ice, risks increase. A few reminders about our drivers and servicing your bins in dangerous conditions:
• If road conditions are too dangerous, service can be halted. Our drivers are trained to recognize and anticipate slippery conditions and dangerous situations; however, if they feel that their truck will damage property or harm a person, they will not proceed.
• Minor undulation in the road can have major impacts for heavy trucks. Most roads crown in the centre to help with water run-off. As roads become wet and slippery, trucks can slip to the lower part of the road and get stuck and get stranded. The only way to get a commercial vehicle out of this situation is to clear the roadway so the truck can back out on a hard, non-slip surface or to call a large tow truck to have it winched out. A stuck truck can have cause delayed service and traffic jams.
Our commitment is: Safety is our priority, always.
Servicing our customers and safety for our drivers is top priority. As British Columbia’s Lower Mainland will endure powerful winter storms throughout the fall and winter, there will likely be impacts on daily business operations. We ask for your help in getting our roadways, driveways, and alleyways clear of fallen leaves, branches, and debris.
We appreciate and thank you!
