A shredding event to benefit The Rotary Club of South Surrey's sponsorship of a Canine Assistance Intervention dog and handler raised more than $5,000 for the cause.
Organizers say a record 8,400 kilograms of documents were shredded during the June 11 event, held in Ocean Park.
"By 9:15 a.m. – well before (the shredathon) started at 10 a.m. – there were about 10 cars lined up at Ocean Park Safeway with their boxes ready for shredding," Urban Impact founder Nicole Stefenelli said in a news release. "It was so busy that after only two hours, the shredding truck was filled to capacity, which has never happened before. This is the most amount shredded, ever, for a four-hour event.”
One person who attended donated $700.
Last Wednesday (June 15), the Rotary club presented Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) officials with a cheque for $5,000 – one-third of the club's $15,000 sponsorship goal.
PADS breeds, raises and trains certified assistance dogs, which provide life-changing independence to people with physical disabilities other than blindness.
