On September 18, a group of entrepreneurs will hear about how Nicole Stefenelli of Urban Impact and Christopher Ng, CEO of Alterrus (vertical farming system manufacturer) are using their companies as tools for positive societal change: delivering both positive societal impact and profit to shareholders. This event is part of the Start Up Canada BC Tour (www.startupcan.ca).

The final leg of Startup Canada’s National Tour with the mission to celebrate and inspire entrepreneurship across the country is now underway. Urban Impact is very excited to be hosting a tour of our New West materials processing facility.

“We are excited to have Startup Canada join us at our state-of-the-art New West processing plant.  Along with Andrew Eng, CEO of Altrerrus, I’m pleased to have the opportunity to discuss a topic that is very dear to my heart, “Social Impact Entrepreneurship: do right by the world and deliver profits,” Nicole Stefenelli, CEO, Urban Impact.

Startup Canada is an entrepreneur-led, national movement to enhance the country’s competitiveness and prosperity through entrepreneurship. Its National Tour has engaged nearly 25,000 Canadians and 250 partner organizations through a series of Town Hall Meetings to develop community-driven solutions to challenges faced by entrepreneurs.

“Spirited entrepreneurship is a cornerstone of BC’s culture and a key driver in the province’s economy,” said Dean Prelazzi, Chair of Startup Canada’s BC’s Steering Committee and Managing Director of the BCIC Acceleration Network at the BC Innovation Council, the ambassador organization for the tour. “We welcome the opportunity to give BC entrepreneurs a strong voice in this national dialogue. It’s a valuable opportunity for communities across the province to compare notes, share ideas and work together to advance BC’s and Canada’s entrepreneurial performance in a global context.”

“Small Business BC is proud to host this celebration of the nearly 400,000 small business owners and entrepreneurs across BC. We need to recognize the contributions they make to the economic vitality of this province and to Canada as a whole. In BC, small businesses are big business; they are the backbone of the economy,” George Hunter, CEO, Small Business BC.

Start Up Canada’s tour reaches Vancouver September 18-21, and celebrates with a mix of events focused on social impact entrepreneurship; the defining moments of 20 tech entrepreneurs followed by September’s Startup Drinks; an exploration of what’s fueling Aboriginal economic development; the impact of immigrant entrepreneurship, and a multi-panel event exploring the intersection of women, technology and entrepreneurship. The tour’s grand finale event will be held at the TELUS World Science Centre on the evening of September 21.  A full event listing is featured on the Startup Canada Campaign website www.startupcan.ca.
